A native of Davenport, Iowa, Jan Volk graduated from Colby College in 1968 and received his doctoral degree from Columbia University School of Law in 1971. Passing the Massachusetts Bar Exam in June of 1971, he began full-time employment with the Celtics. In his 26 years with the Celtics, the last 13 as General Manager (succeeding the legendary Red Aurebach), Volk was part of five NBA World Championship teams (1974, 1976, 1981, 1984, and 1986). He was an instrumental figure in molding teams which from 1979 through 1996 collected ten Atlantic Division titles, five Eastern Conference crowns, and three NBA Championships. During his Celtics tenure, Volk was responsible for the acquisition, contractual negotiation, and ultimate signing of all Celtics players. Volk has taught "The Business of Sports" at Tufts University since 1998 and operates a college sports action photography company. He lives in Wayland Massachusetts with his wife, Lissa.
